Really benefited from Kelli’s guidance on designing trail courses. I never really understood all of the details in designing the course. So many factors to consider in addition to just placing obstacles. All of the lines, circles, half circles and straightness on approach/exit to consider. Kelli brings all of these elements together in a simple straight forward way. Thank you for the thoughtful guidance!

So who am I and how did I learn how to design trail courses?

In 2006, I (Kelli Paulson) created an event called Trail Rider Challenge. It is a horse trail challenge event created to help you measure your progress with your horse and have some friendly competition. These events have been held at my farm, at other people's pastures and arenas, at horse fairs, horse expos, and at state fairs. The piece that makes each of these events memorable is great course design.

Then in 2020, the Virtual Trail Rider Challenge was created so riders can elnjoy the benefits of trail obstacles, improve their horsemanship, and have some friendly competition, all from home!

16 years later, I have designed a lot of trail courses! I have to admit, over the years, my designs have improved. I have learned so much from trail and error, studing course design in other sports, and judging over 2,000 horse trail course entries!

Who is Kelli?

Kelli Paulson uses trail obstacles to help you improve your horsemanship.

You can do more with your horse than you ever imagined!

Do you want your horse to be confident, willing and responsive? Do you want to be more confident, know exactly what to practice and have less fear?

Then let’s do this.

My passion is teaching you how to understand and apply horsemanship in an effective way by using trail obstacles. I use vaquero style methods with a little dressage plus what I have learned through my own experiences to break things down in a way you can understand and apply to your riding. We will learn skills both on the ground and in the saddle and apply those skills to trail obstacles. Trail obstacles are a fabulous way to measure our progress.

Kelli is the author of "How to Build Simple Trail Obstacles and the co-author of the "Working Equitation Handbook". Kelli has been teaching horsemanship clinics for 15 years.

If you miss class, you can still watch the recording and complete the process.

When are the recording be availble?

Please allow 24 hours for the replay to be availble.

How do I get the Zoom link and the PDFs to print?

After you pay, you will be taken to a course area. You will find everything you need here.

I specifically search for events that have courses designed by Kelli. I find her courses can be as simple as I may need for a green horse or as challenging as I need for an experienced horse.
With simple options, the same obstacle can be ridden by all levels of horses and riders. I have found Kelli’s courses to be safe for the horses, not causing injury. Horse and rider safety is top priority for me.
Kelli’s obstacles are well thought out, creative, and usually simple to recreate at home. I really like that Kelli incorporates horsemanship into the pattern. A rider with lots of finesse can carefully think out the course “lines” to maneuver the horse from one obstacle to another. Kelli sets up her courses for smooth transitions that can display a high level horse rider quiet clearly. I recommend Kelli for course design.
